The Folks at Yankee Barn Homes

1. Maine Art featuring Lyman Whitaker Wind Sculptures  Okay, this isn’t really “decor” but I consider my yard as much a part of my home-scape as my interior furniture. These wind sculptures  by the Utah based sculptor, Lyman Whitaker, have all the qualities described above and more! I now own one; it’s a piece I gaze at every day. Simply beautiful.

2. Scraps Furniture through Lux Woodworks    Two young, enterprising graduates of Savannah College of Art & Design, Ryan Parsons and Mike Caffey have taken their show on the road to Lakewood, Colorado where they’ve begun a wonderful business designing and building rustic furniture pieces from reclaimed and scrap wood. Their work is simple, yet imaginative and  nicely suits a wide variety of  interior decors used in post and beam homes. 3.  Company C   This fantastic home furnishings store began 15 years ago in the Concord, NH garage of an enterprising husband and wife team, Chris and Walter Chapin. Wow, is all I can say. They have come quite a long way in a relatively short period of time. Their penchant for bright and colorful textile combinations work extremely well in a timber frame home.

4. Stray Dog Designs  This company’s tagline is “Fetching Home Accessories”. I love it when a company is both unique and amusing, and this one goes far beyond those two descriptors. Just reading the “About Us” page is a treat in itself. Then you get to their products and the phrase compelled to buy takes on a whole new meaning! 5. Third Bay Shades  Unique, one of a kind, totally custom, and hand crafted are just a few of many ways to describe this shade and lamp base company. Brother and sister team, Bob and Holly Ostrander, create custom shades and refurbish vintage lamp bases. They also make their own lamps from just about anything including driftwood, statuary, urns, bedposts and children’s cowboy boots, to name just a few!

6. Z Gallerie  Stylish Home Decor & Chic Furniture at an Affordable Price is the company catch-phrase and I’m happy to report this tag line is not stretching the truth. A newer, edgier version of West Elm, this company’s greatest deals are to be found under the “Sale” tab. A pillow cover and the insert for under 50.00? It’s here. A candelabra just for fun under $30.00? No problem.  Take a look:

As always, there were far more fave finds of mine than I could put in this post. You’ll most likely be seeing more of my discoveries in the weeks to come, so please  stay tuned….

When last we saw the barn home, it looked like the photo above. Much had been accomplished, but it was obvious this post and beam was definitely still under construction. Now, construction has progressed to near completion.  Please join us as we take a look to see how far this New England style timber frame has come since we last saw it. Wow, what a difference a few months makes in the construction of a Yankee Barn home. Simply Gorgeous!! Let’s take a “walk” around the place to see what’s new.

A pebble stone walkway leads to large slabs of granite that form the steps to the front door; a perfect look for a barn home. Wood steps or decking would not have worked nearly as well for this style home. If you look up, you’ll see the stonework has been completed on the chimney using the same granite as is found in the steps.

On  the great room end of the barn, we find a beautifully shaped patio which, come next summer, will have the plantings portion of the landscaping completed. Notice the granite slabs here used both as steps and as accents to the patio and check out the spot-on barn style light fixtures, finished in the same color as the trim. It’s the attention to detail which makes all the difference. Very nicely done!  This is the view from both the patio and the great room. That’s Lake Charlevoix beyond the tree line.

The far corner of the house is where we see the back, or “mud room” entrance to the home. The full shed addition, the granary as it’s called at YBH, is the perfect place for a back door into the laundry/walk-in closet area. It leads directly to the post & beam kitchen.

While it may look a bit out of proportion now, when the shrubs fill in they will form a perfect hedgerow wall on either side of the gate. Love it!

When these photos were taken this past fall, the interior work was almost finished and the homeowners were beginning to move in. Yankee Barn Homes intends to photograph this home in the future, but Adelaine Construction and the homeowners were kind enough to share some interior photos so we could see the inside in progress. Still under construction, the post and beam kitchen is awaiting a colorful tile back-splash, both above the cook-top and on either side of the sink.  The breakfast nook just off the kitchen is full of light. What a great space to welcome the day.The dining room light has just been hung. I love the weighted pulley system on a pendant light as it expands usability of the fixture a great deal.

Upstairs, the loft area is having furniture added…

…while the master bath is all but finished.

I can not wait for this home to be photographed this coming summer so we can once again visit this beautiful post and beam barn home.  Until then we say “Well done, Yankee Barn Homes and Adelaine Construction Company…WELL DONE!”

Winter? What winter?? Adelaine Construction has the frame up in no time and begins installing the wall panels. The great room end of the home is still exposed; but you can see the two-story opening has already been framed in by sub-flooring.

Within days, Adelaine Construction has the post & beam frame up and the walls and roof completely enclosed……while out back, a full length shed addition is quickly nearing completion. Wow, these guys are fast!

Just as quickly, siding and trim begins to go on and a cupola and chimney enclosure appear.

In the meantime, look what’s happening inside the barn home. Radiant heat tubing for hot water has been laid throughout the home and a thin layer of cement is now going down before the wood flooring is placed on top. This heat is extremely even and efficient and for those of us concerned about the aesthetics of a floor,  no worries; wood, tile, and even stylized and polished concrete are just a few of your flooring options.

Back out front, the main entrance to the home is really taking shape. Siding is completely up and gorgeous wood double doors are about to be complimented by a traditional pair of sliding barn doors. Hangers for the doors have already been installed on the glide rail located under the pent roof door trim.

The barn doors are hung and the front door begins to give hints of just how nice this area will look when completed. These doors are certainly aesthetically pleasing, but in the cold winters of northern Michigan, they also serve the very practical function of heat conservation!

Okay, I believe I’ve intrigued you enough to check back  in a few days.  We’ll all get to see what happens over the months as this barn home progresses toward becoming a gorgeous post & beam home on the shores of Lake Charlevoix. Oh yeah, and don’t worry about those white doors you see on the garage in this last picture. It was too cold when the shot was taken to have them painted. When next they appear, they’ll be the same beautiful deep green as the other doors and trim!
